The second Coen Tunnel forms part of the ring road around Amsterdam. It is important that traffic is allowed to flow as smoothly as possible. The canopy marks the transition from light to dark. The semi-open grids lead traffic from the open entrance with its light-coloured walls over a distance of 50 m into the tunnel itself. A similar construction is used on the other side to lead traffic back onto the open road.
The canopy is made from a light-steel construction, which is supported by concrete brace beams between the tunnel walls. The main supporting structures consist of thirteen curved beams, which are placed longitudinally along the tunnel. These trusses are composed of HEA 120 profiles and protrude six metres above the tunnel entrances. Since it was not possible to add fixtures to the concrete beams, it was decided to attach the steel using wires around the beams. T-beams were placed in the opposite direction above and below the trusses and grids were then fitted above and below the trusses. The entire steel construction is hot-dip galvanized and has a green-black powder coating.
